Roller Derby in Paradise

Name one thing better than being in paradise. How about playing roller derby in paradise? The San Diego Derby Dolls’ Mainland Marauders team did just that on Saturday, October 3, taking on the Hawaii Pacific Roller Derby’s (HPRD) Hulagans. The bout was held at the outdoor venue of Kamiloiki Park in Honolulu, HI. Against a backdrop of a tropical, mountain landscape, and despite two brief, rain-timeouts--rain falls from the sky, game stops, track gets wet, track dries, game on--the Mainland Marauders held off PRD’s Hulagans with a score of 108-81.
The Marauders were comprised of a squad of players that included various skill levels, from veterans to a first-time bouter to three players imported for the bout from the Maui Roller Girls. The only member missing from this motley crew of players was Vince Neil. Although a mixed team, the strong leadership of the Marauders by team captains Ivanna S. Pankin and Trish the Dish, also with Lemon Drop at the helm helping to pivot the less-seasoned players held the team together to bring home the W.
Kung Pow Tina jammed for nearly half of SDDD’s total points with 47, with Heidi Evidence and Cherry Punch bringing in 19 and 14 points, respectively, to stave off the hungry Hulagans. The ladies of HPRD not only played a solid, tough game but were also gracious hosts to the visiting team. Mahalo, HPRD!
