Derby Dolls Have Heart

Usually, when a person says an athlete has "heart", they're referring to passion and drive, but in the case of the San Diego Derby Dolls, "heart" means both passion and compassion.
Derby Dolls teamed up with other local celebrities for the 28th Annual Firefighters and Friends charity luncheon at the Coronado Marriott Island Resort on Friday September 23, 2011 to raise funds for the United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) Foundation. Dolls were teamed up with a firefighter or another local celebrity to help "serve" tables during the luncheon. Waiters accepted tips for refilling drinks, clearing plates, arm wrestling, and back massages.
Newscasters John Weisbarth of 4sd and Carlo Cecchetto with CBS 8 were especially encouraging about thinking outside the box to earn money for the UCP. Although the Dolls politely declined from participating in the live auction to literally take the shirt of someone's back, the firefighters didn't back down from the challenge, with one shirt removal reaching $1300.
"Once again, our celebrities drew 'rave' reviews for their energy, their antics and their serving abilities. Proceeds from the event totaled over $63,000 and 370 San Diegans chose to spend their lunch hour with us. [They] not only made this year’s event a success, but also insured the success of the event for many years to come,” stated UCP spokesman, John Mooney. SDDD is looking forward to participating in more events within the community.
